Gymnastics:

Exactly how many events do you have to perform today?  Sometimes we forget that winning comes from focusing on just one event or dismount at a time. You first must master this basic mental skill—the ability to focus on the process of execution, while letting go ofyour worrying about results.

It’s easy to forget this simple concept when you feel you have too much to worry about at one time. “Don’t miss this landing”, “I don’t want to blow this routine”, “Are you going to take the wrong line again?” These are a few examples of what a result-focused gymnast is thinking while performing. A focus only on results does not help you perform the current routine or event; it only creates tension and distracts you from what you need to do in the present moment.

Focusing on the task at hand means this: keeping the mind in the “here and now.”   At the start of the competition for example, all that matters is your first event.  Ask yourself this simple question: “What should I focus on right now to perform my best?” The answer will lead you to success.

Recognizing the importance of mental training is your first step and Elite Minds can get you there.
